CAT Bond

CAT bond is a short for catastrophe bond, a high yield bond used as insurance in the case of catastrophe, such as hurricanes or earthquakes.
If issuer of CAT bond suffers a loss from a predefined catastrophe, than the obligation to pay interest or principal is deferred or even forgiven.
Investors will often invest in CAT bonds because of higher yields but with higher payment risks.
