Selloff is a moment of sudden drop in the value of security, caused by enormous increase in supply.
When one company issue bad earnings report, it can change investing climate for that company's securities and cause widespread selling. Also, sudden increase in oil price can cause widespread selling of securities of companies with high energy usage.
